HOW TO DETECT EARLY SIGNS OF PREGNANCY

HOW TO DETECT EARLY SIGNS OF PREGNANCY

Having a baby is an experience every woman dreams of at some point in her life. Getting prepared for this experience can be an exciting process. However, most often, due to lack of awareness (especially if it’s her first baby), a woman can often get delayed in attaining the knowledge of her pregnancy.

A woman’s body, becomes her baby's home for nine months (or around 40 weeks) and the whole experience becomes a journey of a myriad of new physical sensations. To prepare one for this journey, we’re going to talk about how to detect early signs of pregnancy.

NO PERIODS OR LIGHTER BLEEDING.

One of the most apparent signs that make a woman suspect or know that she is pregnant is missing her menstrual period. Not all women go through the experience of 'no bleeding at all'. Some women tend to experience bright spotting (fresh bleeding), or brown spotting (bleeding that happened a day or so ago), at some or the other stage during their pregnancy. This may appear as a heavy bleed, a 'light period', or as something that one notices when wiping herself after going to the toilet.

About 50% of women, who experience early pregnancy bleeding, continue to experience a normal pregnancy. However, up to 50% will experience a miscarriage at some point after the bleeding starts. This kind of bleeding is usually investigated by an ultrasound.

NIPPLE AND BREAST CHANGES.

Upon reaching puberty, girls notice a change in their breasts as they develop and enlarge under the influence of the hormone known as “estrogen”. When a woman becomes pregnant, her breasts undergo further changes from about 2 to 4 weeks after conception. This is due to the milk ducts growing in preparation for breastfeeding. This also occurs due to an increase in blood supply, making the veins in the breasts more noticeable.

The breasts often feel tender and swollen. By about 12 weeks of pregnancy, the skin of the nipple and areola (area around the nipple) may start to darken. Skin color changes differ in each woman. However, women with darker hair and complexions may notice more color changes than their fairer skinned, blonde or redheaded counterparts. The nipples usually become more noticeable and sensitive (or even sore). One may wish to start wearing good fitting bras (such as a sports bra without under wires) to support the changing breasts.

MORNING SICKNESS.

Morning sickness or what is also spoken of as 'all day and all night sickness', involves a feeling of nausea, and, or vomiting. This is the most common physical complaints of early pregnancy. It takes place due to the body's reaction to the high levels of pregnancy hormones in the body. Many women find that certain smells can trigger an overwhelming feeling of nausea (or vomit).

DIZZINESS AND FAINTING.

When speaking of how to detect early signs of pregnancy, one often comes across dizziness and fainting. Fainting used to be an unsophisticated way of determining if a woman was pregnant back in the Victorian era. During early and middle pregnancy, it is a very common experience. It occurs because the woman's blood vessels naturally relax and dilate under the influence of the hormone “progesterone”, lowering her blood pressure.

BLOATING, CRAMPS AND BACKACHE.

A lot of women experience bloating, mild cramping and slight backache as pre-menstrual symptoms. As the uterus grows, these sensations may also be linked with early pregnancy. Some women find that tissue salts help with cramping. If one experiences strong or severe cramping or pain, the local doctor should be contacted for guidance and advice.
